Foot in high heel x-ray

There can be an absolute correlation between your high heels and developing structural abnormalities in your spine.

The recent research from the Institute of medicine (IOM) shows that more than 116 million Americans are suffering with chronic pain.  That basically says that 1 out of 3 in our community are suffering and has been suffering for awhile. With this sad and alarming statistic it is a must to look for and avoid situations that will have a negative affect on your spine. A spine that is STRUCTURALLY within the NORMAL limit is, straight from front and has three curves from the side. The curves are in the neck, mid back and the low back. The normal curve in the neck also causes a person’s head to be positioned over their shoulders. The head positioning can be observed from the side as the a person’s ear and top of the shoulder should be aligned.

normal-structure-web

The normal alignment of the spine develops as the baby starts to grow inside the mother. The research shows that a newborn baby should have the proper spinal positioning from birth. The proper structure of the spine is as important as the foundation under the house, the alignment of your car, etc….if these structures are not in the proper position than those objects will start deteriorating and get permanently damaged. If the foundation of your house is not properly aligned than the doors will not close properly, the windows do not work properly, the roof develops cracks…If your car is not properly aligned than the tires and the parts wear down. The same is happening with an person that has structural abnormalities in their spine. Some of the major secondary conditions cause by a properly that is not aligned spine include degenerative arthritis, pains, pinched nerves, muscle spasms…

So how do these misalignments take place? The simplest answer is because of STRESS.

Stress can be categorized into three different categories. Physical, Chemical and Emotional stress. In this article we will focus on physical stress as it pertains to wearing high heels. High-heels give a women a taller and more slender appearance, and make women’s legs look thinner and more shapely. However, we should be aware that elevated heels will cause your lower back to accentuate its curve. Although there is a normal curvature in the lower back, the heels are increasing the amount of curve beyond the normal limits. This will predispose the person to stress on their joints and misalignments leading to chronic pain overtime. High-heels can be especially aggravating and harmful if you already have a misaligned spine. This increased curvature in the lower back, commonly referred to as hyper-lordosis, will narrow the opening between the vertebrae where the nerve root exits thus causing compression of the nerve roots within that opening (neuro-foraminal compression). It may also cause enough additional disc stress to result in further disc bulging (herniated disc) and subsequent sciatica (pain down the leg) due to nerve root compression.

If a structural abnormality is already present from pervious stress or traumas, than the hyper-lordosis that is made worse from high-heels will have multiple affects. Some of these are:

Facet glide with probable facet syndrome, Nerve root compression within the neuro-foramen (pinched nerves), Further disc stress and degeneration, Possible increase in disc herniation or bulging, Contribute to or aggravate sciatica, Contribute to or aggravate piriformis syndrome.

It is risky to wear high-heels and even down-right destructive if you already have structural abnormalities. This is more probable especially if you wear high-heels on a frequent basis.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM

If your not sure high heels cause back pain in your case, the sound advice to follow would be to listen to the voice within. NO PAIN;NO GAIN does not apply to wearing heels.

If pain is increased with high heel use or you feel more back pain the next day or so after their use, then it would be prudent to avoid wearing high-heeled shoes. If your lower back pain seems aggravated by the use of high-heels a negative heel shoe, or what is known as an earth shoe, may be beneficial and should be tried as a possible remedy.

Using negative heeled shoes alone will probably not cure your lower back condition but it could go a long way in helping you manage it. Along with other action steps most importantly to be checked and analyzed by a Structural Chiropractor, this could very well be an important treatment ingredient.

Whether, your high-heels and low back pain go together or not, high-heels do and will put your lower back in an abnormal posture and alignment. This will aggravate an existing lower back pain problem.

If you don’t already have a lower back pain condition the chance are great that regular use of high heels will sooner or later cause or contribute to the development of one.

You need to decide for yourself if wearing high-heels is worth it

It was an honor being able to meet Georgia Governor Nathan Deal as he signed the Proclamation for Subluxation Awareness. As the newly elected President of the Georgia Council of Chiropractic, I was grateful for all the efforts that went into the signing of this proclamation!

Subluxation Awareness Month
Whereas the human body represents a wondrous symphony of form
and function both complex and organized, and

Whereas it is universally understood that this symphony of life is
controlled and coordinated by the brain and nervous system which
orchestrates the vast intricacies of the human body, and

Whereas it is vital for functional harmony that the nervous system be
communicating clearly throughout the body without interferences thus
allowing individuals to express health at their maximum potential, and

Whereas vertebral subluxations were first discovered in September of
1895 and represent one of the most common, yet widely unfamiliar
causes of nerve system interference, and

Whereas  knowledge  and  understanding of vertebral subluxations
would promote research and help encourage proper lifestyle choices
resulting in better life expression and overall health,

Be it therefore
Resolved, that September be recognized as Subluxation Awareness
Month, and that this time be highlighted by public education to raise the
public consciousness about the benefits of living a life with a properly
functioning nervous system, free from subluxations.

DID YOU GET YOUR FLU ADJUSTMENT YET?

Every year there is a debate about whether to get the flu shot. The question is what if there is a better way to protect ourselves and families from the influenza virus that we are not being told about?  In a recent article by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research titled “Flu Vaccine: Sorting Fact from Fiction” the same question was posed. The overall consensus is that the vaccine is not beneficial and that other options are more beneficial. Many studies have showed the connection between chiropractic, the nervous system, and immune function. This is what the article reported.

Studies in Ontario Canada to determine whether the incidence of influenza there has decreased following the introduction of their Universal Influenza Immunization Campaign in 2000, have found that there is no decrease in the mean monthly influenza rate following the introduction of their campaign. In another study from the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that there has not been a decrease in mortality rates in any age group since increasing their vaccinations and that the benefits of flu vaccines are overestimated. Another study has shown that there is an increased likelihood of death unrelated to the flu in people between the ages of 65 to 74 who receive the flu vaccine.

Here is the insert from FLULAVAL ( flu vaccine) and it says, “There have been no clinical trials adequately demonstrating a decrease in the Influenza Disease after vaccination with Flulaval”

To add to all this, the majority of the influenza vaccines in the United States contain the methyl mercury based preservative, which has been linked to autism, Alzheimer’s, and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

The National Vaccine Information Center gives the following ideas to avoid getting the flu or to quickly fight it off:

1. If you have the flu, stay home until you are well

2. If you know a person sick with the flu, avoid contact until they are well

3. Wash your hands frequently

4. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water

5. Get adequate rest

6. Eat a wholesome diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially foods containing vitamin D3

7. Spend a few minutes a day in sunlight to help your body make and store vitamin D.

8. Consider Structural Corrective Chiropractic Adjustments for healing and maintaining health.

9. Exercise regularly when you are well.

10. Lower stress through meditation and other healthy lifestyle changes.

Although all of these are great ways to stay healthy, the most important to consider is the Structural Corrective Chiropractic Adjustment. The adjustments have a positive effect on the immune system function. According to the famous Nobel Laureate, Dr Hans Selye, “The beginning of the disease process begins with Structural Abnormalities”. Structural Correction based Chiropractors correct structural abnormalities that result in interference of the nervous system by affecting the function of the nervous system. Since the beginning of chiropractic, chiropractors have insisted that microbes and viruses do not affect each of us the same, and rather a healthy immune system allows us to fight off attacking microbes.

During the influenza epidemic, which brought death and fear to many Americans, it has been estimated that 20 million people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. It was chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims that led to the profession’s licensure in many states. Researchers reported that in Davenport Iowa, out of the 93,590 patients treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths — a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases, with only one death. Outside Davenport, chiropractors in Iowa cared for 4,735 cases with only six deaths– one out of 866. THE RISE OF THE ‘TEXTING’ EPIDEMIC

Everyone is doing it. Look at a crowd and you can easily see several people looking down at their phones and rapidly moving their thumbs. The newest research is indicating that people are texting more than calling each other. The habit of texting is much higher amongst the newer generations but everybody is texting more and more. A person texting is usually sitting with their phone in their lap. The head is bent forward and down while the eyes focus on the phone. The average person will also roll in their hips and sit in a slouched position.

The recent research by Business News Daily reports that we Americans are spending more than 12 hours a week texting. The position of the body and the time spent in that position is creating an epidemic is our society. The epidemic is ANTERIOR HEAD SYNDROME (AHS). A Structural Chiropractors, concerned with the Human spine being in a normal range of alignment, are having to correct AHS more than ever before.Image

As science and technology are advancing, we are able to determine normal ranges of many things in the body. There is a normal range for Blood pressure, Heart rate, Liver and kidney function etc. The research and years of clinical data has also determined the ideal norm for the spin and a range within which the human body functions at an optimal level. The normal for the spine is completely straight, looking from the front and having three curves when looking from the side. In Anterior head syndrome the person starts to lose the curve in their neck as the head juts forward. The primary condition of AHS has many secondary conditions that start surfacing over time. One secondary condition is bad posture with the head moving forward causing a hump to develop in the upper back region. Other secondary conditions include pain, numbness, tingling in the neck and going down the arm and the hand. Long periods of looking down and texting causes a rapid degeneration and arthritis.

Imagine a bowling ball weighing about the average weight of the human head, about 15 pounds. If you were holding the ball on top of your shoulders you could balance it easily. Now extend your arms out while holding this ball. What happens within seconds is you feel the pressure from the ball in your entire Spine. You would start to feel that way just by holding the bowling ball for few seconds with texting you would be doing it for much longer periods of time. The body would start to misalign itself into an abnormal range. It is obvious why there is  huge concern about the time spent texting, the spine and the health of the person who has developed Anterior head syndrome.

BACK-PACK TO SCHOOL

The summer is almost over, and although that may be a relief to some of you parents, the kids don’t see it that way! One of the most important aspects of the Back To School season is the BACK PACK! Carrying these packs puts abnormal pressure on the body and damages the spine, and in turn, the nervous systems of our children. Choosing the right backpack may be one of the most important school supplies a parent can purchase for their child in regards to their health and safety. Is your child’s backpack a good fit?

Every September, more than 20 million students go back to school carrying backpacks that are too heavy and pose a serious risk to the wearer’s well being. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), young children today suffer from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and poorly fitted, overly heavy backpacks are key factors. Along with back pain, improper backpack use can result in headaches, poor posture and various other health problems.

Here are some necessary Backpack Safety Tips

Choose It Right — Select a backpack that has wide cushioned straps, which will distribute the weight evenly on the shoulders. In addition, a backpack with a waist strap can help stabilize the load because it does not allow the backpack to flop around.

Pack It Right — The weight of a loade

d backpack should not exceed 15 percent of the body weight of the wearer, particularly in small children. Wearers should pack the heaviest objects first, so they are carried lower and closer to the body. Students should pack only essential items in their backpack and, if necessary, make frequent stops at their lockers to exchange books.

They can also lighten the load by carrying heavy textbooks under their arms rather than in backpacks.

Lift It Right — Before attempting to lift it, check the weight of the backpack. Then, face the backpack, bend at the knees and lift with the legs, not with the back. Always use two hands and slip on one strap at a time.

Wear It Right — Use both shoulder straps, making sure they are snug but not too tight. If the backpack touches the back above the collar line, the straps are too tight.. Also make sure the pack is worn properly using

both straps synched up fairly tight so the

bag is not sagging down to their low back. The bo

ttom of the bag should not go below the child’s waist.  If the pack has a waist strap, be sure to use it

Warning Signs for Parents

Parents should look for the following warning signs that indicate a child’s backpack may be causing a problem:

  • The child cannot take off or put on the backp

    ack without struggling.

  • The child has to lean forward to carry the backpack.

  • The child is experiencing numbness or

weakness in the arms and/or legs.

  • The child has one shoulder that is higher than the other.

Though a popular style now, parents should di

scourage the use of messenger-style bags,

which are slung over one shoulder. Messenger-style bags put additional pressure on one shoulder, which can cause misalignment of the spine.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

It’s important for parents to look for the warning signs that backpacks are being worn or used inappropriately. Early interve

ntion can prevent serious injuries, the types of injuries which may result in long-term health problems, especially among young children whose bodies are still developing and growing. If parents notice any of the warning signs listed above, they should immediately speak to or visit a Structural Chiropractor. Here at Planet Chiroprac

tic, we are concerned with maintaining the optimal structure and natural curves of the spine because optimal spinal structure leads to optimal function of the human body.

PATCH IT OR FIX IT?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 10, 2013 by chiropracticdouglasville

One of my favorite educational games for our patients is the ‘rubber band’ game.

The way this game works is that I tie a rubber band around your finger. We now wait and see what happens. Within a period of time the skin starts to change its color and the fingers starts hurting. What would happen if we left the rubber band on the finger for the next hour, day month or longer? Of course the finger would keep getting worse and eventually will have irreparable damage.

At this time I ask the patient, from the solutions I give them, which one would you fix the problem with the finger and which solution would just patch it.

One of the solutions might be to exercise the finger. This might make the finger feel better but it does not correct the cause of this particular problem? No

A person can massage their finger to make it feel better. This can offer temporary relief but again in this situation because it does not fix the underlying cause, the finger keeps getting worse.

Another solution is to put some pain relieving cream or medicine on the finger. Does this help temporarily relieve the finger? Yes, but does it fix the problem? No

Finally we can cut the finger off, it might alleviate the symptoms but the person has permanent damage in their body.

The only right answer is to remove the rubber band. This is the only true fix.

A Structural Abnormality in your spine is very similar. Especially because it puts pressure on the nerves just like the rubber band on the finger. Consider looking at what you are doing with this abnormal health condition that you might have. Many people keep patching up their symptoms and not actively pursuing a fix. In my office we see many patients that have been previously trying to patch up the issues they have with their spine, consequentially because the problem is not getting fixed the spinal condition, just like the finger, keeps getting more damaged. What separates me from the traditional doctor is that we look for the underlying cause of the problem and apply Structural Correction to fix it. The correction of the structural abnormality is how we can remove the pressure of the nerve and stop it from coming back.

So, in your daily life are you pursuing a fix or a patch?Image

THE HUMP ON YOUR BACK

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 28, 2013 by chiropracticdouglasville

normal-structure-webIt is a sensitive subject with many but it is also very misunderstood. Many have blamed old age on this problem yet we are finding this condition in younger people too. The research is now showing that Dowager’s hump or Granny’s hump is a secondary condition resulting from a primary condition called the Anterior Head Syndrome. There are many documented secondary conditions that are caused by Anterior Head Syndrome (AHS), these include Dowager’s hump, neck, arm and hand pain, headaches, numbness in the arm and hands, nerve impingement Syndrome, muscular tension and spasms, Compressed (degenerated) disc, damaged (degenerated) spine, degenerative arthritis and many more.   Although most traditional doctors treat these secondary conditions, our focus at Planet Chiropractic is find the underlying cause or what is the primary condition an correct it.

There are many lifestyle factors (physical, emotional and chemical) that cause the development of Anterior Head Syndrome.  A physical trauma like a fall, any type of accidents, sitting or standing in the same  position for long periods of time… can cause an abnormal position in the spine and over time that develops into the Anterior Head Syndrome. The use  of technology is causing many of us to look down all day either at a computer, phone, games, etc. Being in this abnormal position from prolonged periods will worsen  the Anterior Head Syndrome. Emotional stress causes people to go into a protective hunched position and unknowing to themselves they are developing AHS. Even Chemical stress from the air you breath to the environment around you can indirectly cause  the development of this structural abnormality. By the time a person noticeably has Anterior Head Syndrome the damage is already there and professional  intervention from a Structural Corrective Chiropractor is needed to discover the severity of  the structural abnormality and how to properly corrective it.

There is lots of research from the top researchers in the field of human anatomy that have discovered the normal alignment of the spine. There are  ranges of normal throughout your body. There is a normal range for body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate… and there is also a normal range  for your spine. For the spine to be structurally normal it has to be straight from the front and from the side, a person should have a curve in their  neck, mid and low back. The neck curve can be observed from the side, the top of your shoulder and the hole in your ear should be aligned. If the  person is suffering from the Anterior Head Syndrome in their spine than their ear would be more forward compared to their shoulders. Overtime as  the pressure from the Anterior Head Syndrome increases the body starts to develop muscle in the upper back to support the abnormal pressure.  Research shows that for every 1 inch your head moves forward from its normal position equals to fifteen pounds of extra pressure on your upper  back. The development of this extra muscle overtime, is what many have observed to be a hump on the person’s back and is many times referred to as  ‘granny’s hump’. The development of the Anterior Syndrome is primarily a Structural abnormality and not due to the age of the person.

Anterior Head Syndrome is one of the health problems that our office checks everyone for regularly. Our comprehensive structural examinations  helps us measure the amount of Anterior Head Syndrome and allows us to to determine if it is correctable.

LOSS OF STRUCTURE AT BIRTH

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 12, 2013 by chiropracticdouglasville

group of babies

Many infants and children suffer from secondary issues caused by mis-alignments in their spinal structure.  Most commonly infants suffer misalignments in the upper cervical bones of the neck due to birth trauma. These secondary issues include, but are not limited to:  Allergies, colic, crying, depressed immune response, fever, fussing, hyperactivity/ADHD, feeding problems, sleep disruptions, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), reflux, ear infections, depressed respiratory functions, and in unfortunate instances sudden infant death syndrome.  Planet Chiropractic’s own Dr. Awais Butt is a nationally published author and researcher regarding infants and children involving misalignments in spinal structure.  These secondary issues are caused by the primary problems in structural alignment.  These infants do not exhibit the typical secondary symptoms of neck pain and muscle tension seen in adults, yet continue to suffer from secondary symptoms. These secondary issues are due to the primary cause which abnormal spinal structural alignment is creating abnormal nervous system communication between the brain and the rest of the body resulting in abnormal function of the infant’s vital organs (Heart, lungs, digestive organs, immune system, hormone balance, elimination etc.)  Sometimes when there is a misalignment infants are comfortable feeding on one side, but not the other side because they can’t turn their head easily in both directions. The technique for adjusting infants is different than the technique used to adjust adults; there is no “popping” associated with the gas release of the joints, instead the technique utilizes a more gentle pressure resembling a light touch.  Some babies even sleep through their adjustment!  At Planet Chiropractic we treat the entire family, providing optimal structure and performance for a healthier and more fulfilling life!

WELCOME!!!

It is probably not by accident you are here at our blog!

As we have found the majority of our visitors are referred here. In any case, we’re glad you are here. We are a different type of chiropractic clinic, and as such, this site is different.

It is not meant to be an over bearing electronic brochure for our practice. You will not find coupons for “Free Exams”, steak knives or anything of that sort. What you will experience is a “journey” that – in the end, will have you looking at your calendar and scheduling a complimentary consultation.

And by the way, in our office, a consultation is simply a casual conversation where we learn a little about you, and you learn a little about us. After all, we’re not the right office for every person, so doesn’t it make sense to discover that before you begin a relationship with our practice? We think so, and hopefully – so do you.
